Sumba, mostly known for its ikat from the east part of the island. There are only two areas where ikat is made; West (Kodi) and East Sumba, as it is forbidden to make ikat in other areas due to Sumbanese beliefs that it could restrict the flow of We, an esoteric equivalent of rain flowing in the island, its fluid body.
This ikat fabric, Hinggi (men’s blanket) is decorated in horses and chickens, the native herds of Sumba. Dyed deeply in indigo and morinda, with the prominent red color.
