Rare and known as the best, woven textile made by the hands of Umbolali, a master of Tenun Pahikung from Sumba, shows beauty, local wisdom, and power.
With ikat technique, this Selendang is woven with a design of crocodile which in Sumba’s culture, this symbol represents leadership and power. The other animal that can be seen here is dragon. Motifs of dragon is not originally from Sumba’s culture. Instead, this symbol is originally from China.
Sumbanese people knew this motif from Chinese pottery that through trades. Sumbanese traded Sandalwood with Pottery from Chinese merchants.
Through the hands of Umbolali, this Ikat piece is one of a few left from the master.
