The elegant staple of Palembang comes in the staple material of old-time Palembang; silk. Today’s Palembang was where Srivijaya, an important Buddhist Kingdom in Southeast Asia, emerged.

Srivijaya’s school of Buddhism and how it’s located in Malaka Strait making Srivijaya a hub for merchants around the world, including Gujarat. These Gujarati merchants brought their tie-dye knowledge to Palembang where later on, it has become a signature of Palembang textile.

Kain Pelangi or tie-dye in Palembang is indicated by the numbers of the main center. This is called Bintik Tujuh, an original tie-dye motif from Palembang. The colors are most probably obtained from Kecubung and Gambir flower that creates a mixture of deep purple.
