Description
Betel-nut cutters are used to slice and peel shavings from the dried and hard Areca nut (that hardens to a wood- like consistency), before wrapping it in a betel leaf with calcium hydroxide (slaked lime) and some spices for extra flavoring.
Chewing the mixture of Areca nut and betel leaf is a tradition or ritual which dates back hundreds of years in much of the geographical areas from South Asia eastward to the Pacific ocean. In Indonesia, the tradition of chewing Betel Nut are widely spread across Sumatera people, Javanese, Balinese, Sulawesi, including NTT and NTB.
