Kudus, a small city located in the middle of everything; to the north is Jepara, a port city known for its teakwood, to the far south is Yogyakarta known for its classic Batik with its Sogan Brown colors, to the far east is Rembang and Pati, the border between East Java, to the South West is Demak, one of the early towns where Islam was introduced by Wali Songo and to the Far West is Pekalongan where Batik was “reinvented” by Peranakan merchants with its dazzling vivid colors and isen (filling) that is known as cecek.
This Batik Kudus is a unique one that combines all the culture represented in Kudus; the Sogan and Indigo color dominating the fabric, the Pagi-Sore that indicates the lack of cotton textile at that time (probably made during 1940s-1950s), and the isen that is similar to Pekalongan isen. This antique batik is called Batik Saudagaran, made by and for Peranakan market.
