Today’s Palembang was where Srivijaya, an important Buddhist Kingdom in Southeast Asia, emerged.

Srivijaya’s school of Buddhism and how it’s located in Malaka Strait making Srivijaya a hub for merchants around the world, including Arab, Gujarat and India. These Gujarati and Indian merchants brought their textile with Patola motif that later on, adapted into the style of Indonesia’s traditional ikat and batik, including the one from Palembang. Meanwhile, when Islam took over Palembang, the Islamic values are also applied when it comes to the motifs.

Such as in this fabric, the motif here is vaguely representing animals. There are birds, however, their feet and wings are merged with the flowers and roots. Unlike Peranakan batik where birds are made obvious.
