Today’s Palembang was where Srivijaya, an important Buddhist Kingdom in Southeast Asia, emerged.

Srivijaya’s school of Buddhism and how it’s located in Malaka Strait making Srivijaya a hub for merchants around the world, including Gujarat and India. These Gujarati and Indian merchants brought their textile with Patola motif that later on, adapted into the style of Indonesia’s traditional ikat and batik, including the one from Palembang.

This Selendang (scaf) obtains its color from natural dye; indigo blue from Nila and red from Gambir. These two colours dominate the colors of batik in southern part of Sumatra, including Palembang. The pinggiran of this Selendang is dominated by flowers, with one of them being Kembang Cempaka (Frangipani).
