Rote, the first island in Dutch East Indies to be christianized, was the earliest to get formal education after the ruler of Thie was baptized and built a school in 1735. This christianisation was done without the iron fist of the Dutch making Rote riched with its culture.
Rote’s ikat ornaments were identified by its wearers’ class, status, and origin. However, no ikat from Rote is the same. Each has its own individual motif.
With influence from Patola fabric, Rote’s ikat fabric has an interpretation of tumpal on each border. Dyed with indigo as the base color and turmeric as the yellow accents, this ikat selendang indicates nobility as yellow is restricted to the nobility only.
